蒸気時代へのノスタルジアは、私たちの国民性の一部であり、蒸気機関車の姿や音は強い感情を呼び起こす力を持っています。
2004年6月、ウェールズのマーシル・タイドフィル（Merthyr Tydfil）近くのペン・イ・ダレン鉄工所で、レールの上を初めて走る蒸気機関車から200周年を記念するさまざまなイベント、レイルフェスト2004が始まり、コーニッシュエンジニアのリチャード・トレビシック（1771-1833）が作った機関車が登場しました。 また、世界初の鉄道旅客定期便は1807年にウェールズで開始された。 レイルフェスト2004は、イギリス全土で開催された鉄道の旅と鉄道遺産を祝うイベントです。

- Edward Thomas (1878-1917): 詩人で、鉄道の旅とグロスタシャーの鉄道駅に触発されて書いた Adlestrop, 1900の作者。
- W.H.オーデン（1907-1973）：1936年にロンドン・ミッドランド＆スコットランド鉄道の郵便列車に関するドキュメンタリー映画の解説として書かれた詩『Night Mail』の作者。
- Canon B.S.T. Simpson（1912年生）：鉄道機関車の童話「きかんしゃトーマス」の作者であるW・アウドリー牧師（1911-1997）と鉄道に関する書簡を交わす。
